The MxO Opportunity for 5G/LTE Private Mobile Networks

June 30, 2021 /Posted byexpetowireless

Among Telco industry leaders, we’re expecting 5G to reshape the relationships between Mobile Network Operators / Mobile Service Providers (MxOs collectively) and enterprises. In fact, GSMA predicts that 5G will be the first mobile generation to have a greater impact on enterprises than consumers. One facet of this new focus on enterprise connectivity will be the proliferation of next-gen Private Mobile Networks (PMNs), driven not by the capabilities of MxOs but rather by the needs of enterprises. By this, I mean a PMN solution that is repeatable, scalable, secure, and affordable – and enables the IT/OT agility required in enterprises’ Industry 4.0 journeys. And because only 5% of 5G revenues will come from connectivity, it’s important that MxOs act now to ensure their competitive edge in the market through end to end solutions which encompass connectivity, compute, and applications to the enterprise edge.

Transitioning the Power of Control from MxO to Enterprise

According to Chris Antlitz, the principal analyst at Technology Business Research, “enterprises want closed systems that they can control.” Though it’s unrealistic to expect enterprise leaders to understand MxO operations, it’s equally impractical for enterprises to relinquish all of their network authority. Because the private wireless market is expected to grow to $5.7 billion by 2024, there is a huge opportunity for MxOs to pioneer this kind of Enterprise First™ connectivity that gives the power of control to the enterprise itself. And whichever MxO acts first to provide enterprises with the kind of PMN they need is sure to set itself up for sustained success in these changing times.

Expand lifetime value by delivering higher value services.

By embracing this Enterprise First outlook, MxOs can sell more while actually offloading responsibility to the business itself. A new offering like private LTE that gives the enterprise the services it needs – the ability to control network segmentation, make rapid changes to devices, and ultimately move at the speed of business – will give MxOs something new to sell and show that they are willing to do business with enterprises differently than in the past.

Foster scalability by simplifying the MxO’s role.

Deploying a PMN is a labor and hardware-intensive task for MxOs since every enterprise has its own network priorities, stipulations, and requirements. The current MxO solution for PMNs is not flexible enough to apply to a wide range of use cases without lengthy planning stages that tailor-fit a solution to each enterprise’s needs. But introducing an easily scalable PMN solution would both drive new business as well as enhance existing business by being more responsive to the changing needs of enterprise customers.

Enterprise-first Private Mobile Networks will ensure MNO longevity in a competitive market.

The Case for Expeto

Fortunately for MxOs, Expeto is a leap ahead. Our disruptive NeXtworking solution is the world’s leading enterprise PMN platform – as easy to install and support on-site as Wi-Fi. Utilizing a unique hybrid solution for private mobile networking, our platform enables enterprise customers to connect to any private or public mobile network with seamless integration into their IT systems. MxOs can now offer enterprise IT/OT teams the ability to manage their PMN on their own terms while MxOs maintain their already established infrastructure. This will effectively monetize MxO network investments across new and valuable enterprise frontiers.

Installed behind the enterprise’s firewall, our platform allows MxOs to provide a private experience that gives the power of control to the enterprise for both public and private wireless networks. The typical support and relevant management overhead is passed on to the customer, because they’re the ones managing the network to create and orchestrate the policies they want – inclusive of deploying and dynamically configuring their own SIM cards to reflect these policies. This is increasingly valuable as MxOs are driven to expand their own networks to win the race to 5G and accommodate more and more IoT devices for customers while monetizing relevant edge compute and application solutions. And with the Expeto platform, it doesn’t matter what type of customer it is. Our solution was designed to seamlessly integrate to meet the needs of various high-performing industry settings, ensuring effortless scalability of PMN services.

By partnering with Expeto, MxOs have the opportunity to open new revenue streams with adjacent solution areas which will assure meaningful and sustainable growth in this increasingly competitive market. It’s only a matter of time before hyperscalers and systems-integrators begin offering the kind of controllable PMN solution that enterprises are demanding. And unless MxOs heed this call to action, they will be relegated to the mere communication pipes they have invested billions of dollars into with dreams of growth – dreams that will never manifest as others  innovate to enable this new breed of connectivity platform.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. MxOs need only seize this opportunity to realize unprecedented growth and shareholder return by giving their enterprise customers the power of control they need in their Industry 4.0 journeys. And with the Expeto platform, MxOs can enable the full end-to-end PMN solution that enterprises are demanding today.
